Harmful or Questionable TikTok Oral Health Trends You Should Avoid

Harmful or Questionable TikTok Oral Health Trends You Should Avoid

Social media is full of fun, fast-paced content-but not all of it is worth trying, especially when it comes to your teeth. TikTok has become a hotspot for DIY dental hacks and viral trends, some of which can do more than good.

As dental professionals, we understand the desire for a whiter smile or straightened teeth-but shortcuts can lead to serious damage. Here are a few of the most concerning TikTok oral health trends we’ve seen, and what you should be doing instead.

  • DIY teeth Whitening with Hydrogen Peroxide or Baking Soda

The Trend: rubbing straight hydrogen peroxide or baking soda directly onto teeth to “instantly whiten” them.

Why It’s Harmful:

Undiluted hydrogen peroxide can cause gum irritation, enamel erosion, and long-term sensitivity. Baking soda is abrasive and can wear away enamel, making teeth appear more yellow over time.

  • Using Magic Erasers to Whiten Teeth

The Trend: Some users claim that rubbing a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on your teeth removes stains.

Why It’s Harmful:

Magic Erasers are made of melamine foam-a cleaning product, not something that belongs in your mouth.

They are highly abrasive and can permanently damage enamel, leading to sensitivity, yellowing, and increased risk of decay.

  • “Natural” Toothpaste Replacements (Like Charcoal, Lemon Juice, or Oil Pulling)

The Trend: replacing toothpaste with “natural” alternatives like lemon juice, charcoal powder, or coconut oil.

Why It’s Questionable or Harmful:

Lemon juice is highly acidic and erodes enamel.

Charcoal powders are abrasive and can wear down enamel while offering no real whitening benefit.

Oil pulling isn’t harmful, but it’s not a substitute for brushing and flossing. It’s can’t remove plaque or prevent cavities on its own without investing at least 30 minutes each pulling session.

The Truth:

“Natural” doesn’t always mean safe. Stick to fluoride toothpaste for proven protection against cavities and decay.

  • DIY Teeth Filing for “Even” Smiles

The Trend: Using nail files or other tools to even out tooth edges at home.

Why It’s Dangerous:

Tooth enamel doesn’t grow back. Once it’s filed off, it’s gone forever.

This can lead to sensitivity, structural weakening, and even nerve exposure.

You could damage your bite or alignment permanently.

What You Should Know:

Only a dentist should reshape teeth-and it’s a very precise process. Never DIY your dental contouring.

  • “At-Home Braces” Using Rubber Bands or Hair Ties

The Trend: Using rubber bands of DIY materials to “close gaps” between teeth without orthodontic help.

Why It’s Extremely Dangerous:

Rubber bands can slip under the gumline and cut off blood flow, leading to tooth loss.

Moving teeth without supervision can severely damage the roots, gums, and bone structure.

Serious Warning:

At-home orthodontics can have permanent consequences. Always seek professional orthodontic treatment.

The Bottom Line

We get it-social media makes everything look easy and instant. But when it comes to your oral health, there are no shortcuts worth risking your teeth for.

If it’s not approved by professionals, it’s not worth the likes.
